SIXTH EDITION
Sound of Wander: geografie dell’ascolto is an invitation to get lost in the languages of chamber music of today. The project, created by Associazione musicAdesso and curated by mdi ensemble, is divided into three intercommunicating experiences: concerts, dialogues to guide the audience through the world of composers and a composition masterclass, entrusted this year to Francesca Verunelli.
In 2022 we celebrate the twentieth year of mdi ensemble activity together with some composers who followed us from the beginning: Mauro Lanza, Marco Momi, Simone Movio; Franck Bedrossian and Marco Stroppa, the next teachers of the New Music Week, our educational project; Mikel Urquiza, one of the best young European composers (we proposed for the first time in Italy in 2018); Mattia Clera and Carlo Elia Praderio, young composers we met a few years ago during our collaborations with the Conservatory of Milano.
Two paths intertwine in the programs of the exhibition: the results of post-spectral research, recalled by the presence of Gérard Grisey, and the history of algorithmic composition, starting with James Tenney and up to the new territories of computer-assisted composition.
Sound of Wander is a reflection on the present of chamber music, a “genre” that by definition questions spaces and listening relationships and intersects the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporaneity, opening up to interaction with new technologies, expressive methods and musical instruments .
Among the latter, the smart string quartet, a perfect multi-instrument that amplifies the string quartet through the resonances of a piano’s tailpiece, and the rain machine, an automaton capable of timing the fall of single drops of water on a set. of amplified objects, transporting us in a real mechanized deluge.
